Shivaji Rao Gaekwad was born on 12 December 1950 in Bangalore,in a Marathi based Hindu family. His father Ramoji Rao Gaekwad is a police constable and mother was a housewife.
He has two brothers Satyanarayana Rao and Nageshwara Rao and a elder sister Aswath Balubhai. Completed has completed his schooling in Bangalore, he has worked in in Bangalore Transport Service (BTS) as a bus conductor.
In 90s he joined Madras Film Institute which offered acting class in Chennai and he was married with Latha Rangachari in 1981, in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. He has two daughters Aishwarya Dhanush and Soundarya Rajinikanth. Popular tamil actor Dhanush is son-in-law of Superstar Rajinikanth and husband of Aishwarya.
He joined Madras Film Institute in 1973 to learn acting for an oppurtunity to feature in K. Balachandar’s ‘Apporva Ragangal’ in 1975 as antogonist which is leaded by Kamal .In 1990’s,he became a Superstar not only of tamil movies but in Indian cinema also,his movie created new hight in collection of tamil cinema. Movies like Baashha, Muthu, Padayappa made a new record in box office.

In 2007, He paid ₹26 crore for his role which is highest remuneration for an indian actor at that time film for Sivaji which is directed by Shankar and it was the second highest paid salary for an actor in Asia after Jackie Chan.Shivaji Rao Gaikwad aka Rajinikanth is a megastar in South Indian film industry and the highest paid actor in Asia after Jackie Chan after being paid Rs 25 crore for his role in Sivaji in 2007.He is living God to his fans.Rajinikanth debuted with the National Award-winning Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal (1975), directed by K. Balachander. His journey with Indian cinema started in 1973 to pursue a diploma in acting and as they say the rest is history. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan,and he is the actor who has 46 awards to his credit has also worked as a producer and screenwriter.
